The Benefits of Flotation Therapy

1. Relieve Stress
Do you find it difficult to truly relax and unplug? A floating session can instantly put you in relaxation mode even if your body resists it. Floating reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) levels in your body. This reduction helps boost your productivity, and improve your physical and mental health.

2. Alleviate Anxiety & Depression
If you’re anxious and depressed, a few float sessions can greatly improve your mood and make you feel happier in general. Being inside an isolation tank can help you reach ‘theta brainwave’ state. Traditionally only achievable after years of deep meditation, you’ll begin to understand what is upsetting you.

3. Address Specific Health Conditions
From hypertension to arthritis, migraines, insomnia and post traumatic stress, even conditions such as fibromyalgia are recognized to benefit from floating. Several clinical studies has shown the efficacy of flotation therapy in managing these conditions or their symptoms. So if you’re suffering from any one of them, try using a float tank.

4. Pain relief
If you suffer from chronic pain and injuries, you’ll greatly benefit from regular floating sessions in a sensory deprivation tank. This natural therapy provides effective immediate and long term pain relief. From instant relief by removal of weight from bones, joints and muscles to the long term benefit of relaxation to enable rejuvenation.

5. Better sleep
Because of the stress-relieving effect of floating, you’ll be able to sleep better at night after being inside our isolation tanks at Unwind. If you have insomnia or find it hard to ‘switch off’ your stressed-out mind at bedtime, give floating a try and see for yourself. Many people who’ve tried floating have been amazed at how well they sleep after a float session.

6. Improved circulation
The water in the sensory deprivation tank is made salty and buoyant with extreme salt ratios. Comprising of magnesium and sulfate, epsom salt can help improve your circulation and alleviate muscle pain. It improves your body’s ability to utilize insulin and regulate electrolytes. Magnesium… is an undervalued and under recognized mineral. You’ll enjoy softer feeling skin after floating too.

7. Gets the creative juices flowing
Stuck with writer’s block? Desperate for good ideas but can’t seem to come up with any? Float therapy can help boost your creativity by ridding your brain of any distractions. You can go inside the sensory deprivation tank with a specific problem or question in mind, and come out with a multitude of solution and ultimate decisions.

8. Improve athletic performance
Do you work out regularly or train for an event? Float tanks are good for rest and recovery after strenuous athletic training. The salty water helps break down lactic acid, a chemical compound responsible for that sore muscle feeling after exercising. Your body can focus on healing itself naturally when your senses are deprived of any unnecessary input.

9. Help curb addictions and unhealthy habits
For those who tried to quit smoking and reduce alcohol dependency, you know very well the painful withdrawal symptoms associated with controlling these addictions. Floating helps alleviate pain and decrease cravings for whatever it is that your body is addicted to. When combined with other methods, your chance of recovery from addiction increases!

Frequently Asked Questions About Float Therapy

How do you prepare for a float?
Don’t drink coffee or caffeinated beverages beforehand. Also, don’t shave or wax since the salt water can irritate your skin. If you are hungry eating a light meal about 60 to 90 minutes ahead of time.

Is there music?
Clients can choose to float in silence, or they can choose from the music provided by our facility, as well as, the option to sync and play their own music during a session. Controls for the audio can be located within the tank. Clients have complete control over the volume or can shut the music off entirely.

Will I drown if I fall asleep in there?
There is only 10 inches of water in the tank. Some people fall asleep during a session, but the water is so buoyant that you stay afloat no matter what.

Can I float while pregnant?
Absolutely! We do not recommend floating during the 1st trimester, however, sessions in our Epsom oasis during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of your pregnancy offers immense immediate and long-term benefits to both you and your baby. Float sessions are a great way to begin forming a deeper connection with the unborn child. The sensation of weightlessness is very close to the feeling of being inside a womb. Some mothers have also reported being able to hear their baby’s heartbeat and movements.

We always suggest speaking with your doctor prior to floating. Expecting mothers can float up until 37 weeks of pregnancy. We do not suggest floating before your second trimester however.

How are the tanks cleaned?
Filtering is accomplished through a cartridge filter system which traps debris as small as 5 microns. The entire system runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with the exception of float session time.

Between each session the water is fully filtered 3 times with an industrial strength pump. In addition we have a UV (ultraviolet) bulb that alters the DNA of any bacteria inside the tank and an ozone generator that sanitizes the air inside the tank.

We also require that all floaters shower before entering the oasis, removing any outside bacteria from even entering the environment. The natural bacterial killing qualities of the 1000 pounds of Epsom salt means that the water in the tank is the cleanest water you can imagine.

Can floating assist with pain relief or pain management?
Float therapy is one of the most effective and natural ways to work with your body in relieving pain. During a session, the body enters a restful state and the nerves that sense pain are calmed. The positive effects of a 60 minute session can last upwards of days afterwards.

What do I wear for a float room session?
Each room is completely private so clients can float nude. There is no need to bring a bathing suit but if you would rather wear a bathing suit then you are more than welcome to.

Does anything happen to your skin after soaking for so long?
No, your fingers won’t even prune up. Clients actually comment on the benefits of how silky soft the skin is, from benefits of magnesium.

What does someone do the whole time in a 60 minute session?
Clients are in control of their entire experience at all times. There is a clear glass door to the tank, so you can get out at any time. That said, the 60-minutes usually goes by incredibly fast as you lose perception of time during the session. We encourage all floaters to enjoy this new level of relaxation.

What is a theta brainwave state?
After just a few sessions most floaters naturally enter a theta brainwave state that has benefits such as creativity, enhanced energy, profound insights and even life changing experiences.

Types of brainwaves: (Floating promotes both Alpha and Theta brainwaves)

Beta waves (12-30 Hz): This is your conscious awake state and is focused on the outside world. The higher spectrum of 18-30 Hz is associated with busy or anxious thinking.

Alpha waves (8-12 Hz): You are alert but unfocused. One’s eyes are usually closed, feeling relaxed. When athletes are in the “zone” they are in an alpha state. Muscle memory takes over and peak performance is achieved. Alpha is the bridge between high arousal and low arousal states.

Theta waves (4-7 Hz): The theta state is a state of calmness and relax deepening into drowsiness and the brain shifts to more powerful, slower rhythmic waves. This happens twice a day with falling into sleep and coming out of sleep. It is the state the can be accompanied by dreamlike but vivid mental images usually from memories. Offers a free association state, quieting the mind and body and promotes creativity. These waves are predominating in young children. It is a meditative state, one that skilled monks can do at will after twenty years of discipline and practice
Delta waves (.5-4 Hz): Deeply asleep or unconscious state.

Can more than one person float in a tank at a time?
Double floats do exist, but we feel that they can take away from the self-exploration and relaxation experience. We do have 2 float tanks, so you can invite a friends to float at the same time and then meet in the relaxation area to share your experiences over tea.

What if someone is not comfortable in small spaces?
The float spaces at Unwind are actually small rooms. You are not confined to a small tank with a lid. You are actually able to walk in and then lay in the water to begin floating.

Clients are always in control of the environment and have the ability to open the door at any time. We also provide clients with the option to leave the light on and even adjust the color to their liking.

We try to encourage clients to give themselves a little time to relax and get used to it. It is very safe and comfortable. Many individuals with extreme claustrophobia have reported having no problems in the room and have even stated that it has helped ease their anxiety.

Do I need to bring anything?
Unwind at Westclox does provide some essential items. If you do have contacts then we recommend bringing something to put your lenses into while floating. A brush or comb would also be a good idea for afterwards (a hair dryer is provided). We do provide towels, earplugs, body wash/shampoo, music for each session, and post float tea.

What is the purpose of magnesium for the body?
Magnesium plays a key role in protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, the structural development of bones and also plays a role in the transportation of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, a process that is important to nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm.

Key benefits include:

  • Better sleep
  • Relaxes the nervous system
  • Detoxification
  • Better flexibility
  • Bone integrity and strength
  • Balances Hormones
  • Alkalizes the body
  • Hydrates
  • Aids in digestion & Enzyme function

Can I float if I just dyed my hair?
There is no guarantee that the salt won’t strip some color from the hair. If dye is less a week there is a chance that the float water could bleach it. Traditional highlights arent color on hair, it’s that the pigment has been stripped from the hair shaft. Nothing will reverse that, so it will be fine. One concern with pools and light or highlighted hair is that the ahir will turn green. Since we do not use chlorine in our tanks, that will not be a problem in our facility.

How long has floating been around?
The first float tank was developed in 1954 so there is decades of research to support the benefits of floating. Floating has evolved a lot over the past 60 years into sophisticated tanks and facilities that create a clean, comfortable and fully customizable experience.

What if I just got a tattoo?
We suggest waiting a couple of weeks to ensure it is fully healed and also so the water doesn’t soak the scab and pull out any of the color.

Can I float with my contacts in?
A lot of people actually float with their contacts in but we suggest having a contact case on hand and taking them out if at all possible. If you do accidentally splash water in your eyes you could lose your contact in the float tank and it would make for a less than ideal experience.

What happens if I get salt in my ear?
If you find after a day that some salt was left behind you can mix 1/4 vinegar with 3/4 warm water and pour it into your ear and the issue should be solved. Some clients don’t even use earplugs. Just thoroughly rinse after your session and you should not see any after effects.

How old do you have to be to float?
Anyone under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian show up to sign our waiver. If a floater is under the age of 14 then the guardian will have to remain at the facility for the duration of the session.
